Overview
About the Medical Examiner’s Office
The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office (MEO), a division of the Department of Public Health, is responsible for investigating all sudden, unexpected, and violent deaths in the city. The office determines the cause and manner of death in cases involving homicide, suicide, accidents, and drug overdoses, as well as deaths that occur without medical attendance. While formerly located in West Philadelphia, the MEO is now headquartered at the Public Health Campus at 400 North Broad Street. The facility houses specialized units for forensic pathology, toxicology, anthropology, and odontology.
Records and Reports
The MEO generates detailed autopsy and toxicology reports. These records are available to the legal next of kin and authorized parties (such as insurers or attorneys) upon written request and payment of a fee. It is important to note that the Medical Examiner’s Office does not issue death certificates; those must be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Vital Records. The office also manages a Bereavement Support unit to assist families navigating the difficult process after a loss.
Visit and Security Information
Access to the facility is strictly controlled. The public entrance is located on the Callowhill Street side of the building. All visitors must present valid government-issued photo identification and undergo security screening. The lobby is open for record requests and the release of personal effects. Funeral directors have specific hours for the release of remains and must utilize the designated loading area. 🏛️⚕️🚑📋🔬👮♂️🚫📸
