Juvenile Justice Services Center Overview
The Juvenile Justice Services Center (JJSC), formerly known as the Youth Study Center, is the only secure juvenile detention facility in Philadelphia. Managed by the Department of Human Services (DHS), this facility at 91 North 48th Street houses youth ages 13 to 20 who are awaiting court hearings or placement 🏛️. The center is designed to provide a safe, secure, and structured environment while ensuring the well-being of residents through comprehensive care and supervision.
Services and Programs
The JJSC offers a variety of essential services to support the physical, emotional, and educational needs of detained youth:
- Education: The School District of Philadelphia operates an on-site school, allowing residents to continue their education and earn transferable credits 🎓.
- Healthcare: access to 24-hour medical and dental care, as well as behavioral health services and counseling.
- Social Services: Case management and social work support to assist with court processes and family engagement.
- Recreation: Structured physical activities and programs to promote positive youth development.
Visitation and Security Policies
Visitation at the JJSC is strictly regulated to ensure safety. Appointments are required and must be scheduled between 48 hours and 7 days in advance; walk-ins are not permitted 🚫. Visiting hours are typically Monday–Friday from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM and Weekends from 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM. Only parents, legal guardians, and grandparents are generally permitted to visit. All visitors must undergo security screening (metal detectors) and present a valid government-issued photo ID. Cell phones, weapons, and bags are prohibited in the visiting area. A strict dress code is enforced (no hoodies, no revealing clothes).
