About the Westbay WIC Program
The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program in Warwick is administered locally by Westbay Community Action. This federally funded public health program provides critical support to families in Kent County. It is designed to safeguard the health of low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, as well as infants and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk. While the administrative headquarters is located on Jefferson Boulevard, Westbay Community Action manages clinical sites and distribution resources to ensure accessible care for the community.
Nutrition and Health Services
The program offers a comprehensive suite of health services free of charge to eligible participants:
- Healthy Food Benefits: Issuance of eWIC cards to purchase specific nutritious foods like milk, eggs, cereal, and produce.
- Nutrition Education: Counseling and guidance on healthy eating habits for families.
- Breastfeeding Support: Access to lactation consultants and resources to support nursing mothers.
- Healthcare Referrals: Connecting families with doctors, pediatricians, and immunization services.
Eligibility and Visits
To qualify for WIC, applicants must meet residential, income, and nutritional risk criteria. Services are available to fathers, guardians, and foster parents applying for their children as well. Visitors to Westbay Community Action should be prepared to provide proof of income, residency, and identity. The facility operates as a community hub, so while security is less intrusive than a courthouse, standard safety protocols such as no weapons and respectful conduct are enforced. 🏛️🥦🍼👶🥗🩺🇺🇸
