Overview
Burlington Fire Department: Station 4
Station 4 of the Burlington Fire Department serves the city’s populous New North End (NNE) community. 🚒 Located at 1397 North Avenue, this station is a critical component of the city’s emergency response infrastructure, covering a largely residential area that includes Leddy Park, the Ethan Allen Homestead, and numerous schools. Built in 1966, the station is strategically positioned to ensure rapid response times to the northernmost neighborhoods of Burlington, which can be geographically isolated from the city center.
Apparatus and Staffing
Station 4 is staffed 24/7 by career firefighters and paramedics. The facility houses:
- Engine 4: A primary pumper truck equipped for fire suppression and rescue operations. 💦
- Ambulance 4: A fully equipped Advanced Life Support (ALS) unit providing immediate medical care and transport to the University of Vermont Medical Center. 🚑
- Marine Units: Due to its proximity to Lake Champlain, Station 4 often stores or staffs marine rescue equipment during the boating season. 🚤
Community Role
Beyond emergency response, the firefighters at Station 4 engage with the local community through fire safety inspections and public education. The station features a community room (often used for voting or neighborhood meetings) and serves as a ”Safe Place” for youth in crisis. Residents can visit the station for blood pressure checks or to obtain burn permits (seasonally dependent). 🩸
