Overview
Federal Firearm and Explosive Enforcement
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) maintains its Vermont Field Office at 30 Main Street, Suite 430. Operating under the jurisdiction of the Boston Field Division, this office serves as the primary federal law enforcement hub for investigating violent crimes involving firearms, arson, and explosives throughout Vermont. The agency works in close partnership with state and local police to combat gun violence and dismantle criminal networks.
Regulatory and Industry Operations
Beyond criminal enforcement, the Burlington office houses Industry Operations Investigators (IOIs) who regulate the firearms and explosives industries. Their responsibilities include:
- Licensing: Processing applications for Federal Firearms Licenses (FFL) and explosives permits.
- Compliance Inspections: Conducting audits of gun dealers and manufacturers to ensure adherence to the Gun Control Act.
- Education: Providing guidance to licensees on federal regulations and proper record-keeping.
Contact and Access
The field office is located in a secure federal facility. Public access is restricted, and visits are typically by appointment only. For general inquiries, residents should contact the office by phone. Individuals wishing to report illegal firearm activity or specific crimes can do so through the agency’s confidential tip lines or the local duty agent.
