Stewards of Burlington’s Green and Blue Spaces
Department Mission and Overview
The Burlington Parks, Recreation and Waterfront (BPRW) department is the municipal agency responsible for maintaining the city’s extensive network of public lands and recreational facilities. Headquartered at 645 Pine Street in the South End Arts District, this department oversees more than 35 parks, 550 acres of open space, and the beloved Burlington Bike Path (Greenway). Their mission is to connect diverse communities to the outdoors, promoting health, wellness, and environmental stewardship. The Pine Street office serves as the administrative hub where residents can handle logistics such as reserving campsites at North Beach, booking picnic shelters, or registering for seasonal recreation programs.
Services and Parking Management
Beyond maintaining green spaces, BPRW plays a crucial role in managing city parking assets related to recreation. Residents can visit the office to apply for the Green Mountain Passport (providing free state park admission for seniors and veterans) or manage parking permits. The department manages the city’s community gardens, urban forestry program, and the bustling Community Boathouse Marina. The office also handles facility rentals for weddings and events at iconic locations like the Leddy Park Arena or the waterfront pavilions.
Visiting the Pine Street Office
The administrative office is located in Suite B of the 645 Pine Street building. Visitors can access the customer service desk for in-person payments and inquiries. While the parks themselves are open daily, this business office operates on a standard weekday schedule. Parking is generally available on-site in the shared lot. The facility is ADA accessible, ensuring all residents can access the services they need to enjoy the city’s recreational offerings.
