Overview
Chittenden County Superior Court
The historic Chittenden County Superior Court is located at 175 Main Street, housed in a distinct marble building that formerly served as a U.S. Post Office and Customs House. This facility is the home of the Civil Division and Probate Division of the Vermont Superior Court for Chittenden County. Unlike the Costello Courthouse nearby, which handles criminal matters, this venue is dedicated to civil disputes, estate administration, and county administrative services.
Civil and Probate Services
This courthouse manages a specific set of legal responsibilities:
- Civil Division: Adjudicates lawsuits involving contracts, personal injury, property disputes, and small claims cases (up to $10,000).
- Probate Division: Oversees the administration of estates, wills, guardianships, adoptions, and name changes.
- Assistant Judges: The county’s ”Side Judges” maintain their offices here, overseeing county property and the budget.
- Passport Services: The County Clerk’s office in this building is a designated acceptance facility for U.S. Passport applications (by appointment).
Visiting the Courthouse
The building is situated in the heart of downtown Burlington. Visitors should be prepared for standard security screening upon entry. The Clerk’s Office is open to the public for filing documents and researching records. If you are summoned for Jury Duty for a civil trial, this is typically the reporting location. Parking is available in the municipal garage at the corner of Main Street and South Winooski Avenue.
