Your Voice at the IRS
Mission and Purpose
The Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS) is an independent organization within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), dedicated to ensuring that every taxpayer is treated fairly and understands their rights. The Burlington office, located at 128 Lakeside Avenue in the Innovation Center, serves as a critical safety net for Vermont residents who are experiencing financial difficulties or who have been unable to resolve tax issues through normal IRS channels. If an IRS action is causing you financial hardship, or if you have tried to fix a problem and the system has failed you, the TAS is designed to step in and ensure your case is heard.
When to Contact TAS
This office is not a standard tax filing center; rather, it is a specialized unit for problem resolution. You should contact the Burlington TAS office if:
- You are facing an immediate threat of adverse action (such as a lien or levy).
- You have experienced a delay of more than 30 days to resolve a tax account issue.
- You have not received a response or resolution by the date promised.
Taxpayers can request assistance by filing Form 911 (Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance).
Location and Visiting Protocols
The office is situated in Suite 204 of the Innovation Center. As a federal government facility, security is strictly enforced. Visitors must pass through security screening, which includes metal detectors and bag checks. Valid government-issued photo ID is required for entry. While the office aims to be accessible, appointments are required for face-to-face service to ensure an advocate is available to review your sensitive financial documents. Parking is available in the complex’s visitor lots.
