Overview
US Attorney’s Office – District of Vermont
Federal Prosecution and Litigation
The United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont serves as the chief federal law enforcement agency within the state. Headquartered in the Burlington Federal Building on Elmwood Avenue, this office represents the United States government in legal proceedings. Led by the U.S. Attorney, the staff consists of Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) and support personnel who are divided into Criminal, Civil, and Appellate divisions. The Criminal Division is responsible for prosecuting violations of federal law, including narcotics trafficking, fraud, cybercrime, child exploitation, and terrorism. The Civil Division represents the U.S. in civil litigation, defending federal agencies against claims and pursuing affirmative cases to recover funds lost to fraud or environmental damage.
Community Safety and Justice
Beyond the courtroom, the U.S. Attorney’s Office engages in community outreach programs designed to prevent crime and support victims. The Victim-Witness Assistance Program provides critical services to those affected by federal crimes, ensuring they are informed of their rights and the status of cases. The office also participates in initiatives like Project Safe Neighborhoods, collaborating with local, state, and federal law enforcement partners to reduce gun violence and drug-related crime across Vermont. As the primary representative of the Department of Justice in the district, the office plays a pivotal role in upholding the rule of law and ensuring public safety for all Vermonters.
