Overview
US Marshals Service – District of Vermont
Federal Law Enforcement and Judicial Security
The US Marshals Service (USMS) for the District of Vermont maintains its primary operations within the United States Post Office and Courthouse in downtown Burlington. As the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency, the Marshals Service is the enforcement arm of the federal courts. In Vermont, their mission is comprehensive, encompassing the protection of federal judges, court officials, and witnesses, as well as the management of courthouse security. The deputies stationed here are highly trained to ensure the safe conduct of judicial proceedings and to neutralize threats against the justice system.
Fugitive Investigations and Asset Forfeiture
Beyond the courtroom, the District of Vermont’s Marshals are responsible for apprehending federal fugitives. They lead task forces that coordinate with state and local police to track down dangerous criminals and non-compliant sex offenders. The office also manages the Asset Forfeiture Program, seizing and managing property acquired through illegal activities to disrupt criminal enterprises. Additionally, the USMS handles the transportation and detention of federal prisoners, ensuring their secure movement between correctional facilities and court appearances. While this office serves as a headquarters for these operations, it is a secure federal facility with strict access controls, primarily serving authorized personnel and those with official court business.
