Overview
Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office
The Chittenden County State’s Attorney’s Office is located within the Edward J. Costello Courthouse at 32 Cherry Street. This office serves as the primary prosecutorial agency for the county, representing the State of Vermont in criminal proceedings. The State’s Attorney and their team of deputy attorneys work closely with state and local law enforcement agencies to prosecute crimes ranging from misdemeanors to serious felonies, ensuring public safety and the fair administration of justice.
Victim Services and Advocacy
A critical component of the office is its Victim Services Unit. Dedicated victim advocates provide support to those affected by crime, helping them navigate the complex criminal justice system. Services include:
- Court Accompaniment: Attending hearings and depositions with victims to provide emotional support.
- Information and Notification: Keeping victims informed about case status, court dates, and outcomes.
- Restitution Assistance: Helping victims document their losses and request financial reimbursement from offenders.
- Protection Orders: Assisting with the process of obtaining Relief from Abuse orders.
Prosecution and Justice
The office handles a diverse caseload, including domestic violence, drug offenses, DUI, and violent crimes. In recent years, there has also been a focus on Restorative Justice referrals, working with community partners to address low-level offenses outside the traditional court process when appropriate.
Visiting the Office
Because the office is situated inside the courthouse, all visitors must pass through security screening at the main entrance. A valid photo ID is required, and weapons are strictly prohibited. While the office is open during court hours, appointments are strongly recommended, especially for meeting with specific attorneys or advocates who may be in court throughout the day.
