Overview
About the Burlington Police Department
The Burlington Police Department (BPD) is the primary law enforcement agency for Vermont’s largest city. Headquartered at 1 North Avenue, the department is dedicated to community policing, public safety, and crime prevention. With a focus on integrity, service, and respect, the BPD operates 24/7 to respond to emergencies, investigate crimes, and maintain order within the municipal limits.
Fingerprinting Services
The department provides fingerprinting services for employment, licensing, and background checks, but strict rules apply:
- Appointment Only: Fingerprinting is conducted Mondays only between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM. You must schedule an appointment in advance by calling 802-540-2246.
- Cost and Payment: The fee is $25. Payment is accepted in cash only and you must have exact change. Credit cards and personal checks are not accepted for this specific service.
- Requirements: Applicants must bring a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport) and any necessary paperwork from the requesting agency.
Records and Reports
The Records Division handles requests for accident reports and incident documentation. Public records requests can be submitted online or in person. For record checks, the fee is typically $30. Unlike fingerprinting, the Records window generally accepts credit cards (Visa, MasterCard, Discover), money orders, and bank checks, in addition to cash (exact change). Personal checks are not accepted for record checks.
Location and Parking
The police station is located at the northern end of Battery Street. While there is no dedicated free parking lot for the general public, metered street parking is available on North Avenue and surrounding streets. The facility is a secure building; visitors to the lobby may be subject to screening and must leave prohibited items like weapons outside.
