Criminal Prosecution and Justice
The Kennebec County District Attorney’s Office, located at 95 State Street, is responsible for the prosecution of all criminal cases within Kennebec and Somerset counties. Led by District Attorney Maeghan Maloney, the office represents the state in matters ranging from traffic violations to serious felonies. The primary mission is to seek justice while ensuring public safety, reducing recidivism, and protecting the rights of victims.
Victim Services and Restitution
The office employs Victim Witness Advocates who provide essential support to crime victims throughout the legal process. They assist with:
- Information: Keeping victims informed about court dates and case status.
- Restitution: Managing the collection and distribution of court-ordered restitution payments. Payments can be made via cash, check, or online portal.
- Support: helping victims understand their rights and navigating the complex criminal justice system.
Legal Policies and Procedures
In compliance with recent state legislation, the District Attorney’s staff is prohibited from speaking directly with accused individuals who do not have legal counsel present. Defendants are encouraged to contact Maine Criminal Indigent Legal Services or retain a private attorney. The office also actively participates in specialized diversion programs, such as the Co-Occurring Disorders Court and Veterans Court, aiming to address underlying issues contributing to criminal behavior.
