Togus VA Police Department
The Togus VA Police Department constitutes the federal law enforcement agency responsible for securing the VA Maine Healthcare System – Togus campus. Located at 1 VA Center, these officers are sworn federal agents empowered to enforce federal laws and VA regulations. Their primary mission is to ensure a safe and secure environment for the thousands of Veterans, staff members, and visitors who utilize the medical center’s services every day. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, they act as the first line of defense and emergency response for the entire facility.
Authority and Services
VA Police officers possess full law enforcement authority within their jurisdiction. Their duties extend beyond simple security guarding and include:
- Patrol Operations: Conducting visible foot and vehicle patrols of the hospital, clinics, parking lots, and grounds to deter crime.
- Criminal Investigations: Investigating offenses committed on VA property, ranging from theft and property damage to assault and disorderly conduct.
- Emergency Response: acting as first responders for medical emergencies, active threat situations, and fire alarms on campus.
- Access Control: Managing security checkpoints and monitoring surveillance systems to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive areas.
Visitor Regulations
Because the Togus campus is federal property, strict laws apply. Visitors should be aware of the following:
- No Weapons: Firearms, knives, and other weapons are strictly prohibited on the campus, including in vehicles.
- Search Policy: All persons and bags entering the facility are subject to search by VA Police.
- Photography: Taking photos or videos of patients or security features without explicit permission is prohibited to protect Veteran privacy.
Contact and Location
The Police Operations Center is located within the main medical center complex. For general police assistance or to report non-emergency issues, visitors can dial the main line extension. In the event of an on-campus emergency, dialing 911 will coordinate a response involving both VA Police and local emergency services.
