Overview
Augusta Treasurer and Tax Collector
The Augusta City Treasurer and Tax Collector’s Office is the financial heart of the municipality, located centrally at Augusta City Hall (16 Cony Street). This bureau, part of the Department of Finance and Administration, is the primary destination for residents to handle local payments, vehicle registrations, and tax matters. Known for its efficient ”one-stop” service model, the office allows citizens to take care of multiple municipal obligations in a single visit.
Vehicle Registration and Licensing
One of the most frequented services at City Hall is vehicle registration. The office is equipped to handle:
- Motor Vehicle Renewals: Re-registering cars, trucks, and motorcycles (requires current insurance and mileage).
- New Registrations: Processing paperwork for newly purchased vehicles, including dealer sales and private transfers (bill of sale and title required).
- Recreational Vehicles: Registration for snowmobiles, ATVs, and boats.
- License Plates: Issuance of standard and specialty Maine license plates.
Property Taxes and Payments
The Treasurer’s Office collects revenue that funds city services. Residents can visit the office to pay:
- Real Estate Taxes: Property taxes are due biannually (typically September and March).
- Personal Property Taxes: For business equipment and furniture.
- Excise Taxes: The annual municipal tax on vehicles.
For convenience, the city accepts various payment methods including cash, checks, and credit/debit cards (subject to a 2.5% third-party convenience fee). An online payment portal is also available for those who prefer to pay from home.
Visiting City Hall
The office is located on the main floor of the historic Augusta City Hall, formerly the Cony High School building. The facility is open Monday through Friday, opening early at 7:45 AM to accommodate residents before work. Free parking is available in the lot adjacent to the building. The entrance is wheelchair accessible, ensuring all residents can access city services comfortably.
