Overview
Maine Driver Education and Evaluation Program (DEEP)
The Driver Education and Evaluation Program (DEEP) is a specialized unit within the Maine Office of Behavioral Health, located at 41 Anthony Avenue. This state-mandated program is the critical pathway for individuals who have been convicted of Operating Under the Influence (OUI) to regain their driving privileges. DEEP’s mission is to reduce the risk of re-offense and improve public safety on Maine’s roads through education, assessment, and treatment referral.
Program Components
Individuals referred to DEEP must complete specific requirements based on their evaluation. The program oversees several key components:
- Risk Reduction Program: An educational course focusing on high-risk choices, the effects of alcohol and drugs on driving, and Maine’s OUI laws.
- Under 21 Program: A tailored curriculum addressing the specific risks and laws relevant to young drivers.
- Evaluation and Treatment: If required, participants are referred to community-based counselors for further assessment and substance use treatment.
- Completion Certification: The DEEP office communicates directly with the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) to verify when an offender has successfully satisfied their requirements for license reinstatement.
Registration and Contact
The DEEP office at 41 Anthony Avenue is primarily an administrative hub.
