Overview
Maine State Board of Nursing
Mission and Regulatory Role
The Maine State Board of Nursing was established to protect the public health and welfare by ensuring that nursing care in the state is safe, competent, and ethical. The Board acts as the regulatory body for the nursing profession in Maine, overseeing the licensure of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). It operates under the Department of Professional and Financial Regulation.
Licensure and Services
The Board manages the entire lifecycle of a nursing license, from initial application to renewal and reinstatement.
- Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC): Maine is a member of the NLC, allowing nurses residing in Maine to hold a multistate license and practice in other compact states without obtaining additional licenses.
- Education Oversight: The Board approves and monitors nursing education programs within the state to ensure they meet educational standards.
- Online Services: Most licensing tasks, including renewals and address changes, must be completed through the Board’s online regulatory portal. Paper applications are largely phased out for routine processes.
Discipline and Complaints
A critical function of the Board is to investigate complaints against nurses. If a nurse is found to have violated the Nurse Practice Act—through incompetence, unprofessional conduct, or substance misuse—the Board has the authority to take disciplinary action, which may include probation, suspension, or revocation of a license.
Location and Contact
The Board’s office is located at 161 Capitol Street in Augusta. While staff are available to answer questions, the Board strongly encourages the use of online resources for license verification and application status checks.
- Business Hours: The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, excluding state holidays.
- Mailing: All official correspondence and documents should be sent to the State House Station mailing address.
