Overview
Expanding Broadband Access
The ConnectMaine Authority, now an operational unit of the Maine Connectivity Authority (MCA), is headquartered in the Burton M. Cross Building at 111 Sewall Street. This state agency is dedicated to facilitating the universal availability of broadband to all Maine households and businesses. By integrating with the MCA, the authority serves as a ”single door” solution for digital equity, infrastructure funding, and high-speed internet planning.
Core Mission and Grants
ConnectMaine focuses on reaching unserved and underserved areas of the state. Its primary functions include:
- Infrastructure Grants: Administering funds to assist internet service providers and communities in building out broadband networks.
- Digital Equity: Promoting digital inclusion to ensure all residents have the skills and devices necessary to use the internet effectively.
- Mapping: Collecting and analyzing data to accurately map broadband availability and speeds across Maine.
Community Support
The authority works closely with municipalities, regional coalitions, and private providers. They offer technical assistance and planning grants to help communities identify their connectivity needs and develop roadmap strategies for expansion. Public meetings of the Authority Board are held regularly to discuss policy and approve funding awards.
