New Jersey State House Overview
The New Jersey State House is the historic seat of the state’s government, housing the Office of the Governor and the New Jersey Legislature (the Senate and General Assembly). Located at 125 West State Street in Trenton, it holds the distinction of being the second-oldest state capitol building in continuous legislative use in the United States, originally built in 1792. The building is instantly recognizable by its golden dome, which was restored in 1999 with contributions from New Jersey school children. It serves not only as a functional government center but also as a living museum of New Jersey’s political history and architectural heritage.
Tours and Visitor Information
The State House offers free guided tours to the public, providing an in-depth look at the legislative process, the building’s art and architecture, and the history of the state. Tours typically run hourly on weekdays between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Visitors begin their journey at the State House Welcome Center, which is accessible from the Capitol Plaza or the parking garage. Groups of 10 or more must make a reservation in advance. While the building is open for official business, casual visitors are encouraged to utilize the tour program to gain access to the historic chambers.
Security and Entry Requirements
As a high-security government facility, strict entry protocols are in place:
- Identification: All adults (over 18) must present a valid government-issued photo ID to enter the complex.
- Screening: All visitors must pass through metal detectors (magnetometers), and bags are subject to x-ray inspection.
- Prohibited Items: Weapons of any kind (firearms, knives, stun guns), mace/pepper spray, and sharp objects are strictly forbidden. Backpacks and large bags are discouraged to expedite the screening process.
Accessibility and Transportation
The State House is located in the heart of the Capitol Complex. Limited free parking is available in the Capitol Complex Garage (rear entrance off Route 29) for visitors, provided they show ID to the guard. Metered street parking is also available along West State Street. The facility is fully wheelchair accessible, with elevators and ramps serving all public areas. For those using public transit, the building is a short bus ride or a 15-20 minute walk from the Trenton Transit Center.
