Overview
Overview of Trenton EMS
Trenton Emergency Medical Service (TEMS) serves as the primary provider of Basic Life Support (BLS) ambulance transportation for the City of Trenton. Established in 1981 to address the growing need for dedicated pre-hospital care, TEMS operates as a vital component of the city’s public safety infrastructure, working in close coordination with the Trenton Fire Department and paramedic units from local hospital systems. Headquartered at 244 Perry Street, co-located with the Trenton Fire Headquarters, the service is staffed by certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who respond to 9-1-1 calls for medical emergencies, accidents, and disasters 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The agency responds to a high volume of incidents annually, ensuring that residents and visitors receive immediate medical attention and transport to area hospitals, including Capital Health Regional Medical Center and St. Francis Medical Center.
Emergency Operations and Services
TEMS provides a tiered response system. While paramedics (Advanced Life Support) are deployed for life-threatening conditions, TEMS units handle the bulk of emergency calls, providing essential care such as CPR, defibrillation, bleeding control, and splinting. The service maintains a fleet of modern ambulances equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology. Beyond emergency response, TEMS is deeply involved in community health initiatives, offering standby coverage for large public events, conducting blood pressure screenings, and participating in safety demonstrations to educate the public on injury prevention.
Administrative and Billing Services
While emergency care is available at all times, the administrative offices handle non-emergency business such as billing inquiries, records requests, and recruitment. The service utilizes an online portal to facilitate payments for transport bills and training courses. Residents receiving an invoice for ambulance services can manage their accounts through the department’s billing office. TEMS also operates an Education Department that offers training courses for EMT certification and continuing education credits, ensuring that their staff and other local providers maintain the highest standards of clinical proficiency.
Location and Facility Access
The TEMS administrative headquarters is located within the Trenton Fire Department’s main complex on Perry Street. As a critical emergency services facility, public access is restricted. Visitors dealing with administrative matters, such as billing or records, should contact the office by phone to schedule an appointment or verify hours of operation. Security measures, including identification checks and building screening, are in place to ensure the safety of on-duty crews and sensitive equipment. The location is centrally situated to allow rapid deployment of ambulances to all quadrants of the city.
