Supporting Seniors in Dauphin County
The Dauphin County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is dedicated to serving the needs of residents aged 60 and older. Located in the Dauphin County Administration Building on South Second Street, this agency acts as the primary resource for seniors, their families, and caregivers. Its mission is to promote the independence, dignity, and well-being of older adults through a wide range of community-based services and advocacy.
Services and Programs
The agency administers programs funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging and the county, designed to help seniors age in place safely.
- Senior Transportation: Coordinates shared-ride services to help seniors get to medical appointments, grocery stores, and senior centers.
- Nutrition Services: Manages the ‘Meals on Wheels’ program for homebound seniors and operates senior centers where congregant meals are served.
- Protective Services: Investigates reports of elder abuse, neglect, exploitation, and abandonment. This service is available 24/7.
- Legal and Ombudsman Services: Provides legal assistance for non-criminal matters and advocates for residents in long-term care facilities.
- In-Home Support: Assesses needs for personal care, home health, and caregiver relief to delay nursing home placement.
Visiting the Office
The agency is situated on the 3rd floor of the Administration Building in downtown Harrisburg. Visitors should be aware that this is a government facility with security protocols. Staff are available to help navigate the complex system of benefits, including the PACE pharmaceutical assistance program and property tax/rent rebates. Appointments are recommended for complex consultations.
Community Connection
Beyond direct services, the agency publishes the Senior News and organizes events like the Senior Games. They actively recruit volunteers for their APPRISE program, which helps seniors understand Medicare options.
