Overview
Philadelphia Family Court Division
The Philadelphia Family Court functions as a dedicated division of the Court of Common Pleas within the First Judicial District of Pennsylvania. Located in Center City Philadelphia at 1501 Arch Street, this facility consolidates domestic relations and juvenile services into a single, modern courthouse. The court adjudicates matters involving families and children, prioritizing the resolution of disputes and the welfare of youth and families in the community.
Departments and Legal Jurisdiction
The court is organized into two primary branches: the Domestic Relations Branch and the Juvenile Branch. The Domestic Relations Branch handles legal matters such as divorce, child custody, child support, and protection from abuse (PFA) orders. It also manages paternity establishment and domestic violence cases. The Juvenile Branch oversees cases involving delinquency (crimes committed by minors) and dependency (cases involving child abuse or neglect), as well as adoptions and termination of parental rights.
Security and Visit Policies
- Security Screening: All visitors must pass through strict security checkpoints upon entry, including metal detectors and x-ray screening of bags.
- Mobile Device Policy: The courthouse enforces a strict policy regarding electronic devices. While cell phones are permitted, they must often be secured in Yondr pouches (lockable cases) upon entry to prevent use within courtrooms and waiting areas.
- Prohibited Items: Weapons of any kind, sharp objects, pepper spray, and recording devices are strictly prohibited.
Filing and Administrative Services
The Clerk of Family Court accepts filings for various family law matters. While some forms and petitions can be accessed online, many initial filings must be submitted in person. The courthouse provides specific units for Domestic Violence Intake and Customer Service to assist self-represented litigants. Visitors should be prepared for potential wait times and are advised to bring all necessary documentation, including identification and relevant case numbers.
Accessibility and Transportation
The 1501 Arch Street facility is fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), offering wheelchair accessibility, elevators, and accessible restrooms. The courthouse is centrally located near major transportation hubs, including Suburban Station and City Hall, making it easily accessible via SEPTA Regional Rail, subways, and numerous bus routes.
