Overview
Specialized Investigations Unit
The Narcotics and Vice Division of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police is a specialized investigative unit headquartered within the Police Headquarters building on Western Avenue on the North Side. This division is tasked with addressing complex crimes that affect the quality of life and safety of Pittsburgh’s neighborhoods. Unlike patrol zones that handle general calls for service, the Narcotics and Vice unit focuses on long-term investigations, surveillance operations, and the dismantling of criminal enterprises.
Operational Mandate
- Drug Enforcement: The unit investigates the manufacturing, distribution, and street-level sale of illegal narcotics. Detectives work to disrupt drug trafficking organizations and reduce the prevalence of substance abuse in the community.
- Vice Crimes: This division handles cases related to illegal gambling operations, prostitution, and human trafficking. They enforce laws designed to uphold public order and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation.
- Nuisance Bars: The unit also investigates complaints regarding nuisance bars and establishments that operate in violation of liquor laws or serve as hubs for criminal activity.
Administrative Office
While the division’s detectives operate throughout the city, their administrative base is located at the Western Avenue headquarters. This facility serves as the command center for the Bureau of Police. Members of the public who wish to report suspicious drug or vice activity are encouraged to contact the unit via telephone or through the bureau’s anonymous tip lines. As an investigative headquarters, the office is generally not open for walk-in reports in the same manner as a neighborhood zone station.
