Overview
Department of Court Records: Liened Taxes Division
The Liened Taxes Division, part of the Allegheny County Department of Court Records, is located in the City-County Building on Grant Street. This office is distinct from the Treasurer’s Office; while the Treasurer collects current taxes, this division is responsible for maintaining the official public records of delinquent tax liens filed against properties. 🏛️ It serves as a critical resource for title searchers, real estate professionals, and the general public needing to verify the tax status of a parcel.
Record Keeping and Dockets
The division manages several types of important legal dockets:
- Delinquent Property Tax Liens: Records of unpaid real estate taxes filed by the county, municipalities, and school districts.
- Federal Tax Liens: Notices of tax liens filed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) against individuals or businesses.
- Municipal Claims: Liens filed for unpaid municipal services such as water, sewage, or trash collection.
Public Access and Services
The office provides facilities for researching these public records. While staff can assist with locating dockets, they cannot provide legal advice regarding the removal or disputing of a lien. 📂 Clearances and lien certificates are often obtained here during real estate transactions to ensure a property has a clear title. Payments for certain delinquent liens may also be processed or directed through this office depending on the stage of the claim.
