Overview
Serving the South Side and Hilltop Communities
The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police Zone 3 Station is the primary law enforcement hub for the city’s southern neighborhoods. Located on East Warrington Avenue in the Allentown neighborhood, this station commands a diverse and geographically complex area that includes the bustling nightlife district of the South Side Flats, the steep residential streets of the South Side Slopes, and the ”Hilltop” communities such as Carrick, Beltzhoover, Knoxville, and Mount Washington. Zone 3 officers are dedicated to maintaining public order, responding to emergency calls, and fostering strong relationships with the residents and business owners in this distinct sector of Pittsburgh.
Community Policing and Safety Initiatives
Zone 3 places a strong emphasis on community engagement to address the unique challenges of its precincts. The station houses Community Resource Officers (CROs) who attend neighborhood block watch meetings, coordinate safety events, and act as liaisons between the police force and the public. They work proactively to solve quality-of-life issues, from noise complaints in the entertainment districts to property crime prevention in residential zones. The station also collaborates with the Zone 3 Public Safety Council, a citizen group that meets monthly to discuss crime trends and community concerns directly with command staff.
Operations and Emergency Response
While the station building serves as the administrative and roll-call center, the core of Zone 3’s operation is its patrol units. Officers operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, responding to 9-1-1 calls ranging from traffic accidents to violent crimes. The station lobby is open to the public for filing police reports, seeking information, or requesting assistance with non-emergency matters. However, for immediate emergencies, residents should always dial 9-1-1 directly rather than calling the station desk. The facility is equipped to handle temporary detention and processing before transfer to the county jail.
Coverage Area
The jurisdiction of Zone 3 is extensive, covering neighborhoods south of the Monongahela River. This includes Allentown, Arlington, Arlington Heights, Banksville, Beechview, Beltzhoover, Bon Air, Brookline, Carrick, Duquesne Heights, Knoxville, Mount Oliver City (distinct from the borough), Mount Washington, Overbrook, Ridgemont, Saint Clair, South Shore, South Side Flats, and South Side Slopes. Residents in these areas rely on Zone 3 for all municipal police services.
