Employment Services for People with Disabilities
Mission and Services
The PA Office of Vocational Rehabilitation (OVR), specifically the Pittsburgh District Office located on Penn Avenue, serves as a critical resource for individuals with disabilities who face barriers to employment. Operating under the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, this agency helps eligible residents prepare for, start, and maintain competitive careers. The office houses both the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation Services (BVRS) and the Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services (BBVS), offering specialized support tailored to specific needs.
- Diagnostic Services: Medical, psychological, and vocational assessments to determine eligibility and scope of services.
- Vocational Counseling: Personalized career guidance and the development of an Individualized Plan for Employment (IPE).
- Training and Education: Financial assistance for college, trade school, or on-the-job training programs for qualified clients.
- Restoration Services: Provision of hearing aids, prosthetics, or therapy if necessary to achieve employment goals.
- Job Placement: Assistance with resume writing, interview preparation, and connecting with inclusive employers.
Employer Support
OVR also functions as a partner to local businesses, offering no-cost consultation on hiring and retaining employees with disabilities. Services for employers include analysis of job duties, advice on reasonable accommodations, and information on tax credits such as the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC). The Pittsburgh office actively collaborates with the local workforce development board to ensure an inclusive economy.
