Water and Sewer Authority
The Metropolitan District (MDC) is a non-profit municipal corporation chartered by the Connecticut General Assembly to provide potable water and sewerage services to the Hartford region. Headquartered at 555 Main Street, the MDC is the essential utility provider for Hartford and seven surrounding member towns. The organization manages a vast infrastructure system that includes major reservoirs (such as the Barkhamsted and Nepaug Reservoirs), water treatment facilities, and a network of distribution piping that ensures clean, high-quality drinking water for the capital region.
Customer Service Center
The headquarters on Main Street features a customer service center designed to assist residents and businesses with their utility accounts. Services available at this location include:
- Bill Payment: A walk-in center where customers can pay water and sewer bills using cash, checks, or money orders.
- Account Management: Assistance with setting up new service, transferring accounts, or resolving billing disputes.
- Assistance Programs: Information on payment plans and water bill assistance for eligible low-income customers.
Engineering and Permits
Beyond billing, the MDC Headquarters houses the Bureau of Public Works and engineering divisions. Developers, contractors, and homeowners visit this location to:
- Obtain Permits: File for water and sewer connection permits for new construction or renovation projects.
- Review Maps: Access utility maps to locate water mains and sewer lines before digging.
- Development Services: Consult with engineers regarding utility infrastructure requirements for commercial developments.
Recreation and Stewardship
While the Main Street office is the administrative hub, the MDC is also a steward of the environment. They manage thousands of acres of watershed land which are open to the public for recreation. Information regarding hiking trails, boating permits for Lake McDonough, and watershed regulations can be obtained through their administrative offices or online.
