Overview
County Administration Hub
The Kennebec County Government Center, located at 125 State Street, serves as the administrative heart of the county. This facility houses the County Commissioners, who act as the chief elected officials responsible for the fiscal operations, policy decisions, and oversight of county departments. The building acts as a central point for residents to access various regional services and attend public meetings.
Probate Court
Also located within this complex is the Kennebec County Probate Court. This court handles matters concerning:
- Estates and Wills: The administration of deceased individuals’ estates.
- Guardianships: Appointments for minors and incapacitated adults.
- Adoptions: Processing legal adoptions and name changes.
Administrative Services
The Government Center includes several key offices that support the county’s infrastructure:
- Treasurer’s Office: Manages county finances and accounting.
- Human Resources: Oversees county employment and personnel matters.
- Emergency Management Agency (EMA): While the EMA director operates here, they coordinate county-wide disaster response and preparedness.
Important Location Note
While this building is the traditional county seat, please note that the Registry of Deeds has moved to a separate facility at 77 Winthrop Street. Visitors seeking land records should proceed to that location instead of the State Street offices.
