Overview
Maine Department of Corrections: Central Office
The Central Office of the Maine Department of Corrections (MDOC) serves as the administrative headquarters for the state’s correctional system. Located on the historic AMHI Campus in Augusta at 25 Tyson Drive, this facility houses the executive leadership and support divisions responsible for the oversight of all adult and juvenile correctional facilities in Maine. The Central Office manages a wide array of functions, including policy development, victim services, adult community corrections, and the administration of probation and parole operations. It acts as the nerve center for the department’s mission to reduce recidivism and enhance public safety through evidence-based practices and professional management.
Administrative Services
This location is home to the Commissioner’s Office and key administrative departments such as the Corrections Service Center, which handles financial and human resource matters for the agency. The Classification Division, which determines the appropriate placement and custody levels for residents, also operates from this hub. Additionally, the office coordinates the department’s extensive training programs for correctional officers and staff, ensuring compliance with state and federal mandates.
- Oversight: Management of all state prisons and pre-release centers.
- Community Corrections: Administration of probation, parole, and reentry services.
- Victim Services: Support and notification services for victims of crime.
Contact and Operations
While this facility is primarily administrative and not a prison, it serves as the point of contact for the public regarding department-wide inquiries, including Freedom of Access Act (FOAA) requests and media relations. The office also manages the resident account system, handling funds deposited for individuals in custody. Visitors to the Central Office are typically there for administrative business, employment inquiries, or meetings with department officials. Note that this location does not house residents, and visitation for incarcerated individuals takes place at the specific correctional facilities where they are assigned.
