Overview
Maine State Police: Troop D and Major Crimes Unit
The facility at 36 Hospital Street serves as a critical operational hub for the Maine State Police, housing both the Troop D Barracks and the Major Crimes Unit – Central. Unlike the administrative headquarters located at Commerce Drive, this location is a working barracks where troopers begin their patrols and detectives conduct serious criminal investigations. It is a key component of the state’s law enforcement infrastructure, providing coverage for Maine’s central mid-coast region.
Troop D Operations
Troop D is responsible for patrolling a large multi-county area that includes Kennebec, Lincoln, Knox, Waldo, and Sagadahoc counties. Troopers based here provide law enforcement services to rural towns that do not have their own municipal police departments. Their duties include:
- Traffic Enforcement: Patrolling state routes and secondary roads to enforce motor vehicle laws and investigate crashes.
- Criminal Response: Responding to 911 calls for domestic violence, burglary, assault, and other crimes in rural jurisdictions.
- Community Policing: engaging with local schools and community groups to promote public safety.
Major Crimes Unit – Central
This facility also houses the Major Crimes Unit (MCU) – Central. This specialized division is staffed by detectives who investigate the state’s most serious offenses, including homicides, suspicious deaths, and sexual assaults. The MCU works closely with local police departments and prosecutors to solve complex cases across the central Maine region.
Visiting the Barracks
While the barracks is staffed 24 hours a day by dispatchers and patrol officers, the administrative lobby for public business (such as requesting accident reports or speaking with a supervisor) typically operates during standard business hours. Visitors should be aware that this is a secure police facility. Weapons are prohibited inside the building. Public parking is available in the lot adjacent to the building, accessible from Hospital Street.
