Overview
Maine Data, Research, and Vital Statistics (DRVS)
Office Overview
The Office of Data, Research, and Vital Statistics (DRVS) is a division of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) within the Department of Health and Human Services. This office serves as the central repository for Maine’s vital records, including birth, death, marriage, and divorce certificates. In addition to issuing certified copies of these legal documents, DRVS manages the collection and analysis of vital statistics data, which is essential for public health planning and policy development across the state.
Visitor Services and Hours
While the Maine CDC headquarters is located on Water Street, the public walk-in office for Vital Records is located at 220 Capitol Street.
- Walk-In Service: The office is open to the public for same-day issuance of certified records. Visitors must complete an application and provide valid identification.
- Hours: Public counter hours are typically Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
- Processing Time: While many requests are fulfilled same-day, some may require a 24-hour turnaround.
Requirements for Obtaining Records
Maine is a “”closed record”” state, meaning access to vital records is restricted to individuals with a direct and legitimate interest.
- Identification: Applicants must present a valid government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport).
- Eligibility: You must be the person named on the record, their spouse, registered domestic partner, parent, guardian, or descendant. Proof of lineage may be required.
- Genealogy: Researchers with a valid researcher ID card can access older records (births/marriages/deaths prior to 1892 are generally at the State Archives, while 1923-present are at DRVS).
Payment and Fees
Fees for certified copies are set by state statute. The office accepts checks (personal, cashier’s, certified) and money orders payable to the “”Treasurer, State of Maine.”” Credit cards are generally accepted only through the online VitalChek service or specific in-person arrangements.
