Maine State Agency for Surplus Property
Agency Overview
The Maine State Agency for Surplus Property (SASP), also known as Maine Surplus, manages the disposition of supplies, materials, and equipment no longer needed by state departments. Located at 85 Leighton Road, this facility serves as a central hub for repurposing government assets, extending their lifecycle, and reducing waste. The agency primarily serves ”donees”—eligible public agencies, municipalities, schools, and nonprofit organizations—who can acquire items at significantly reduced costs. Additionally, the agency holds periodic sales allowing the general public to purchase surplus goods, ranging from office supplies to vehicles and heavy machinery.
Services and Operations
The agency operates distinct schedules for different groups:
- Donee Program: Eligible organizations (schools, nonprofits, towns) can view and purchase items daily. This includes priority access to federal surplus property.
- Public Sales: The warehouse opens to the general public specifically on the 2nd Friday of each month from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
- Auctions: Higher-value items like vehicles and heavy equipment are often sold via online auctions or sealed bids.
- Recycling & Disposal: Ensures environmentally responsible disposal of electronic waste and unusable materials.
Visitor Guidelines
Visitors should note that the warehouse is an active industrial environment. No pets are allowed on the premises. For public sales, items are sold ”as-is, where-is,” and all sales are final. Identification is required for check and credit card payments. The facility is located off Civic Center Drive, with a large lot for loading purchased goods.
