Overview
State Benefits Administration
The Group Insurance Commission (GIC) is the state agency responsible for providing and administering high-quality, affordable health insurance and other benefits to the Commonwealth’s employees, retirees, and their dependents. Established to serve the public sector workforce, the GIC covers hundreds of thousands of lives, including personnel from participating municipalities, housing authorities, and redevelopment authorities. The agency negotiates with health plans to offer comprehensive coverage options 🏥.
Insurance Programs
The GIC manages a wide portfolio of benefit plans. This includes various health insurance options (HMOs, PPOs), life insurance, long-term disability (LTD), dental, and vision plans. The agency also oversees Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) for active state employees. They conduct an Annual Enrollment period each spring, allowing members to review and change their coverage to best suit their changing needs.
Member Services
Through the MyGICLink member portal, the GIC offers a streamlined way for members to check their benefits, upload documentation, and update their status. The agency employs Benefit Coordinators within state agencies to assist employees locally, while the central office handles complex eligibility and enrollment issues. They also provide the Mass4YOU Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to support mental health and well-being 🧠.
Location and Logistics
The GIC operates out of the John W. McCormack Building at One Ashburton Place. Visitors should note that this is a secure facility requiring identification and security screening upon entry. While the physical office is open for assistance, members are strongly encouraged to use online tools or mail for routine transactions to ensure faster processing ⚡.
