Overview
Overview of the Health Department
The City of Trenton Department of Health and Human Services is the primary agency responsible for protecting and promoting the public health of the state capital’s residents. While administrative offices are located within Trenton City Hall at 319 East State Street, the department operates various clinics and satellite programs throughout the city. Its mission encompasses a broad spectrum of services, ranging from vital record keeping to disease prevention and environmental safety. The department is dedicated to eliminating health disparities and ensuring access to care for the city’s diverse population. It enforces local and state health codes, manages animal control services, and coordinates emergency preparedness for public health threats.
Vital Statistics and Records
One of the most utilized services is the Office of Vital Statistics, located in the City Hall Annex. This office is the custodian of all birth, death, marriage, civil union, and domestic partnership records for events that occurred within Trenton city limits. Residents can obtain certified copies of these documents for legal purposes, such as obtaining a passport or driver’s license. The office also issues marriage licenses and processes amendments to vital records. It is important to note that same-day service for certified copies is typically available for walk-in customers, though wait times can vary.
Environmental Health and Safety
The Bureau of Environmental Health works to ensure a safe living environment for Trenton residents. Inspectors actively monitor restaurants and food vendors to prevent foodborne illnesses, conduct lead paint inspections in homes to protect children from lead poisoning, and oversee public swimming pools and tattoo parlors. The department also manages the Trenton Humane Law Enforcement & Animal Services, which enforces animal cruelty laws, issues dog licenses, and addresses concerns regarding stray or dangerous animals.
Clinical and Nursing Services
The Bureau of Health Promotion and Clinical Services provides direct medical care and screenings. Services include childhood and adult immunizations, tuberculosis (TB) testing and treatment, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics. The Public Health Nursing division offers case management for families with special needs children and conducts communicable disease surveillance to prevent outbreaks within the community.
