Trenton Office of Emergency Management Overview
The City of Trenton Office of Emergency Management (OEM) acts as the central coordinating agency for disaster preparedness, response, and recovery within the state capital. Operating under the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, the OEM is headquartered at 244 Perry Street, co-located with the Trenton Fire Department Headquarters. The primary mission of this office is to protect the lives and property of Trenton’s residents by developing comprehensive emergency operations plans (EOP) that address all types of hazards, including natural disasters (such as floods, hurricanes, and blizzards), technological failures, and man-made incidents. The OEM serves as the liaison between local city departments, the Mercer County Office of Emergency Management, and state and federal agencies during large-scale emergencies.
Preparedness and Mitigation
A key function of the OEM is Hazard Mitigation. The office continually assesses potential risks to the community and implements strategies to reduce long-term vulnerabilities. This includes maintaining the city’s warning systems to alert the public of imminent threats. The OEM also oversees the Code Blue warning system, which coordinates the opening of warming centers and shelters for the homeless population during periods of extreme cold weather. Additionally, the office manages the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program, training civilian volunteers in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and team organization to assist professional responders during crises.
Response and Recovery
When a disaster strikes, the OEM activates the Emergency Operations Center (EOC), a command hub where city officials and agency representatives gather to direct response efforts. From this location, resources are deployed to manage evacuations, shelter operations, and debris removal. The office works closely with the Trenton Police, Emergency Medical Services (TEMS), and Public Works to ensure a unified command structure. Following an event, the OEM coordinates the damage assessment process, which is essential for securing federal disaster aid and reimbursement for the city and its residents.
Facility and Contact Information
The Office of Emergency Management is located within a secure fire services facility. Access to the building is generally restricted to authorized personnel and those with scheduled appointments. Public inquiries regarding emergency plans or volunteer opportunities are typically handled via telephone or the city’s digital platforms rather than walk-in visits. Residents are encouraged to register for the city’s emergency notification system to receive timely alerts via phone, text, or email. In the event of a life-threatening emergency, residents should always dial 9-1-1 immediately, as the OEM administrative office handles planning and coordination rather than direct dispatch.
