Overview
Overview of the Library
The Trenton Free Public Library is the oldest library in the state of New Jersey, with a rich history dating back to its founding as the Trenton Library Company in 1750 by Dr. Thomas Cadwalader. Originally a subscription-based service, it was incorporated as a free public institution in 1900 to serve all residents of the city. The library is housed in a distinct white marble building on Academy Street, which was dedicated in 1902 and remains a landmark of civic pride. Today, it serves as a vital community hub, bridging the digital divide by providing free computer and internet access, while also offering educational programs, tutoring, and cultural events for patrons of all ages.
The Trentoniana Collection
One of the library’s most significant assets is the Trentoniana Department. This specialized local history room is a premier resource for genealogists and researchers. It houses an extensive collection of archival materials dedicated exclusively to the City of Trenton’s past, including:
- City Directories and Maps: Historical maps and resident listings dating back to the 19th century.
- Oral Histories and Photographs: A vast repository of images and recorded stories documenting the lives of Trentonians.
- Newspapers and Scrapbooks: Microfilm archives of local papers and curated scrapbooks of city events.
Modern Services and Programs
Beyond its historical collections, the library offers a wide array of contemporary services designed to meet the needs of the modern community:
- Technology Access: Public computers, free Wi-Fi, and printing/faxing services are available (nominal fees apply for printing).
- Seed Library: A unique program allowing patrons to ‘borrow’ seeds to grow their own gardens, promoting sustainability and nutrition.
- Notary Public: Notary services are available by appointment for a small fee.
- Museum Passes: Cardholders can borrow passes for free admission to various area museums and attractions.
Visiting Policies
To ensure a safe and welcoming environment for all, the library enforces specific rules of conduct. Security officers are present on-site. Visitors should be aware that large bags and wheeled carts are prohibited inside the building. All bags may be subject to inspection upon entry or exit. Proper attire (shirts and shoes) is required at all times. The library is committed to maintaining a quiet and respectful atmosphere, particularly in reading rooms and the Trentoniana department.
Parking and Accessibility
The library has a small, designated parking lot for patrons, though spaces are limited. Additional parking is available via metered street spaces on Academy Street and surrounding blocks. The building is wheelchair accessible, ensuring that all community members can utilize its resources.
