US District Court for the District of New Jersey Overview
The US District Court for the District of New Jersey in Trenton is a federal trial court located in the Clarkson S. Fisher Federal Building and United States Courthouse at 402 East State Street. As part of the Third Judicial Circuit, this court holds jurisdiction over federal civil and criminal cases arising within the state of New Jersey. The Trenton vicinage primarily serves the counties of Mercer, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren. The court is responsible for adjudicating disputes involving federal laws, the US Constitution, and diversity of citizenship cases where the parties are from different states and the amount in controversy exceeds $75,000.
Civil and Criminal Proceedings
The court handles a wide range of legal matters. Civil cases include civil rights violations, employment discrimination, intellectual property disputes, and prisoner petitions. Criminal cases involve violations of federal criminal law, such as wire fraud, drug trafficking, and cybercrimes. The court also manages bankruptcy appeals and conducts naturalization ceremonies for new citizens. The facility houses chambers for United States District Judges and Magistrate Judges who oversee these proceedings, ensuring due process and the fair administration of justice.
Jury Service and Clerk’s Office
Jury service is a vital function of the court, with citizens from the surrounding counties summoned to serve on both grand juries and petit juries. The Clerk’s Office, located in Room 2020, serves as the administrative arm of the court, managing case filings, maintaining records, and assisting the public with procedural inquiries. While the court has implemented electronic filing (CM/ECF) for attorneys, the Clerk’s Office provides support for self-represented litigants (pro se) who may need to file documents physically or seek information about their cases.
Security and Electronic Devices
Security at the Clarkson S. Fisher Building is strictly enforced by the United States Marshals Service and Court Security Officers. All visitors must pass through airport-style security screening upon entry. Weapons, pepper spray, and sharp objects are categorically prohibited. Under current standing orders, electronic devices (such as cell phones and laptops) are generally permitted to be brought into the building after screening but must be turned off or rendered inoperable inside courtrooms unless specific judicial authorization is granted. Photography and video recording are strictly prohibited throughout the courthouse.
