Overview
U.S. Marshals Service – District of New Jersey
The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) maintains a critical field office within the Clarkson S. Fisher Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Trenton. Established by the Judiciary Act of 1789, the USMS serves as the enforcement arm of the federal courts and is the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. The Trenton office plays a pivotal role in the administration of justice across the district, focusing on the protection of the judiciary, fugitive apprehension, and the management of federal prisoners.
Core Missions
The Marshals Service executes a wide range of federal law enforcement duties, ensuring the smooth operation of the judicial system.
- Judicial Security: Protecting federal judges, court officials, witnesses, and the visiting public from threats.
- Fugitive Investigations: Leading task forces to locate and arrest dangerous fugitives with outstanding federal warrants.
- Asset Forfeiture: Seizing and managing assets acquired through illegal activities to compensate victims and fund law enforcement initiatives.
- Prisoner Transportation: coordinating the secure movement of federal detainees via the Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation System (JPATS).
Facility Access and Regulations
As this office is located within a federal courthouse, strict security protocols are in place. All visitors must pass through magnetometer screening and x-ray inspection. Electronic devices, including cell phones and cameras, are generally prohibited inside the building. While the USMS handles specific administrative tasks such as civil process service, many of its operations are field-based, and the office is not a general public service center.
