Overview
U.S. Secret Service – Trenton Resident Office
The U.S. Secret Service Trenton Resident Office is a federal law enforcement outpost located within the Clarkson S. Fisher Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse. Operating under the Department of Homeland Security, this office supports the agency’s integrated dual mission: protection and investigation. While the Newark Field Office serves as the primary hub for the region, the Trenton office handles local federal investigations and coordinates protective operations throughout Mercer County and the surrounding areas of Central New Jersey.
Protective Mission
The Secret Service is mandated to ensure the safety of the President, the Vice President, their families, and visiting foreign heads of state. The Trenton Resident Office plays a critical role in:
- Protective Advances: conducting site surveys and security planning for VIP visits in the Trenton area.
- Threat Assessment: investigating threats made against protectees originating from the local jurisdiction.
Investigative Mission
Agents in Trenton investigate crimes that threaten the financial infrastructure of the United States. This includes:
- Counterfeiting: tracing the production and distribution of fake currency.
- Cyber & Financial Fraud: investigating complex wire fraud, credit card skimming, ransomware, and business email compromise schemes, often in collaboration with the Cyber Fraud Task Force.
Security and Access
As this office is located within a federal courthouse, security is extremely tight. There is no general public access for walk-in services. Individuals with information regarding counterfeiting or financial crimes should contact the office by telephone first. Visitors with scheduled appointments must undergo rigorous airport-style security screening, including metal detectors and x-ray inspection of personal items. Weapons, pepper spray, and unauthorized recording devices are strictly prohibited.
