Overview
Division of Family Health Services
The Division of Family Health Services (FHS), a core component of the New Jersey Department of Health, is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of families throughout the state. Headquartered in the Capital Center building at 50 East State Street, the Division administers a vast network of state and federal programs designed to support pregnant women, infants, children, and adolescents. Its primary mission is to eliminate health disparities and ensure access to quality preventative care, particularly for vulnerable populations and those with special health care needs.
Key Programs and Initiatives
The Division oversees the implementation of several essential public health services:
- WIC Services: FHS manages the New Jersey Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC), ensuring funding and compliance for local agencies that provide nutrition education and food benefits.
- Early Intervention System: The division coordinates the statewide system for infants and toddlers (birth to age three) with developmental delays or disabilities, facilitating access to therapy and support services.
- Maternal and Child Health: Strategic initiatives focus on reducing infant mortality, improving birth outcomes, and managing the New Jersey Reproductive Health Program.
- Special Child Health Services: This unit provides case management and resources for children with complex medical conditions and congenital disorders.
Administrative Headquarters
This location serves as the administrative hub for these programs rather than a direct care clinic. While policy, funding, and oversight are managed here, direct services—such as WIC vouchers or medical screenings—are typically dispensed at local community health centers and county clinics. Access to the Capital Center building is restricted; visitors must present government-issued identification and pass through security screening in the lobby.
