Overview
New Jersey Office of Legislative Services
Non-Partisan Legislative Support
The Office of Legislative Services (OLS) is the non-partisan administrative and research agency for the New Jersey Legislature. Located within the State House Complex at 125 West State Street, the OLS provides essential legal, fiscal, and committee staffing services to both the Senate and the General Assembly. Its primary functions include drafting legislation, analyzing the state budget, and conducting research on public policy issues. The agency operates under the authority of the Legislative Services Commission and ensures that the legislative branch has the professional support necessary to function independently of the executive branch.
Bill Room and Public Records
For the public, the OLS manages the Legislative Information and Bill Room. This office is the central repository for printed copies of bills, resolutions, and session laws. While most legislative tracking can be done online, this physical office assists citizens, lobbyists, and legal professionals in obtaining official documents and navigating legislative procedures. The OLS also oversees the State Auditor, responsible for auditing state accounts and programs.
State House Annex Access
The OLS is primarily housed in the State House Annex. Visitors attending committee hearings or meeting with legislative staff must enter through the Welcome Center. Security Notice: The complex is secured by the New Jersey State Police. All entrants must undergo strict security screening, including metal detectors and x-ray inspection of bags. Valid photo identification is required to enter the building. The facility is wheelchair accessible and connects directly to the historic State House.
