Overview
Overview of the Commissioner’s Office
The Office of the Commissioner is the executive leadership hub of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Located at the department’s headquarters at 401 East State Street in Trenton, the Commissioner is appointed by the Governor to oversee the state’s comprehensive environmental agency. This office is responsible for formulating and implementing statewide environmental policies, managing a budget of approximately $1 billion, and directing a workforce of nearly 3,000 professionals. The mission is to ensure the quality of New Jersey’s air, water, land, and natural resources while promoting public health and sustainable economic growth. The Commissioner’s Office directly supervises critical internal functions such as the Office of Environmental Justice, Legal Affairs, Communications, and Legislative Affairs, ensuring that the department’s strategic goals are met across all divisions.
Agency Structure and Priorities
The Commissioner leads a vast organization divided into several key areas, each managed by an Assistant Commissioner. These include:
- Air, Energy, and Materials Sustainability: Focuses on air quality regulation, climate change mitigation, and radiation protection.
- Water Resource Management: Safeguards the state’s water supply, manages wastewater infrastructure, and monitors water quality.
- Watershed and Land Management: Oversees land use regulation, dam safety, and flood resilience projects.
- Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment: Manages the cleanup of hazardous waste sites and brownfields to return them to productive use.
- Fish, Wildlife, and Parks: Administers the state’s parks, forests, and wildlife management areas, promoting outdoor recreation and conservation.
Location and Public Access
The NJDEP headquarters is a major state government facility located in downtown Trenton, near the Trenton Transit Center. Access to the building is strictly controlled. All visitors must present valid government-issued photo identification at the security desk in the lobby and pass through metal detectors. While the Commissioner’s Office itself is primarily administrative and accessible by appointment for official business, the building serves as a central point for various public services, such as permit filings and records access (OPRA). Public parking is available in nearby commercial garages, as on-site parking is generally reserved for employees.
