NJ Department of the Treasury Overview
The New Jersey Department of the Treasury acts as the financial steward of the Garden State, overseeing the collection of revenues, the management of state assets, and the formulation of the state budget. Headquartered at 125 West State Street in Trenton, this department is essential for the fiscal health of New Jersey’s government. It is responsible for administering the state’s tax laws, managing the state’s debt, and overseeing the pension and benefits systems for public employees. The Treasury ensures that state funds are allocated efficiently to support public services, education, and infrastructure. Its scope is vast, encompassing everything from the State Lottery to the distribution of property tax relief programs like ANCHOR.
Taxation and Revenue Services
The Division of Taxation and the Division of Revenue and Enterprise Services (DORES) are two of the most public-facing components of the Treasury. They handle the processing of Income Tax, Sales Tax, and Corporation Business Tax. For business owners, this is the primary destination for registering a new business entity, obtaining a Taxpayer Identification Number, and filing annual reports. The department has aggressively modernized its systems, encouraging taxpayers to use online portals such as the NJ Division of Taxation’s online filing systems and the NJ Business Action Center for efficient processing, though paper forms are still accepted for certain procedures.
Unclaimed Property and Pensions
Another critical function housed under the Treasury is the Unclaimed Property Administration. This division recovers lost or forgotten financial assets—such as dormant bank accounts, uncashed checks, and insurance policies—and works to return them to their rightful owners. Additionally, the Division of Pensions and Benefits manages the retirement and health benefit programs for hundreds of thousands of state and local government employees, retirees, and their dependents, making it a vital resource for the public workforce.
Visiting the State Street Facility
The Treasury’s main office is located in the heart of the Capitol Complex. As a key government facility, security is strictly enforced. Visitors entering the building at 125 West State Street must present a valid government-issued photo ID and pass through a security checkpoint that includes metal detectors and bag inspections. While many Treasury services are now available entirely online, those visiting for specific appointments or hearings should arrive early to clear security. Photography and video recording are prohibited inside the building.
Transportation and Parking
Situated near the New Jersey State House, the facility is well-served by public transportation. Several NJ Transit bus lines stop along West State Street and nearby Calhoun Street. The Trenton Transit Center is approximately a mile away, connecting to regional rail services; visitors can transfer to a bus or take a taxi/rideshare from the station. Parking in this area is primarily limited to paid parking garages, such as the parking facility on West State Street, and metered street parking, which is strictly monitored by the city.
