Overview
New Jersey Division of Law (DOL)
The New Jersey Division of Law (DOL), operating within the Department of Law and Public Safety, serves as the primary legal counsel for the state government. Often referred to as the ”people’s law firm,” the Division provides legal representation to the Governor, all executive departments, and hundreds of state boards and commissions. Its attorneys are responsible for defending the state in civil litigation, enforcing state laws, and protecting the public interest in matters ranging from environmental protection to consumer fraud.
Legal Services and Representation
The Division’s work is divided into several practice groups that handle specialized areas of law:
- Civil Litigation Defense: Defends the state and its employees against lawsuits involving tort claims, employment disputes, and civil rights allegations.
- Child Protection: Represents the Division of Child Protection and Permanency (DCP&P) in court proceedings regarding child abuse, neglect, and termination of parental rights.
- Administrative Practice: Advises state agencies on regulatory matters and represents them in administrative hearings.
Location and Access
The Division of Law is headquartered in the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex at 25 Market Street in Trenton. This facility also houses the New Jersey Supreme Court and the Public Defender’s Office. As a high-security government building, access is strictly controlled. The Division primarily interacts with the public through the court system rather than walk-in client services, as it represents the state entity rather than private citizens.
Security Protocols
Visitors to the Hughes Justice Complex must undergo rigorous security screening similar to airport procedures. All bags are x-rayed, and visitors must walk through metal detectors. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind, pepper spray, and sharp objects. Photography and video recording are strictly forbidden within the complex without prior written permission.
