NJ Division of Pensions and Benefits Overview
The New Jersey Division of Pensions and Benefits (NJDPB) is a critical division within the State Department of the Treasury. Located at 50 West State Street in Trenton, the division is responsible for the administration of the state’s retirement and health benefit programs, serving nearly 900,000 public employees, retirees, and their dependents. This includes workforce members from state government, local municipalities, counties, and school boards. The division oversees the operation of major New Jersey pension funds, including the Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS), the Teachers’ Pension and Annuity Fund (TPAF), and the Police and Firemen’s Retirement System (PFRS). Its mission is to provide accurate, timely, and efficient benefits services to the public workforce.
Health Benefits and Insurance
In addition to retirement income, the division manages the State Health Benefits Program (SHBP) and the School Employees’ Health Benefits Program (SEHBP). These programs provide medical, prescription drug, and dental coverage to active and retired qualified employees. The division also administers the State Employees’ Deferred Compensation Plan and the Supplemental Annuity Collective Trust (SACT), offering additional avenues for financial planning. Group life insurance policies associated with the various retirement systems are also processed through this office.
Member Services and MBOS
To streamline access to information, the NJDPB utilizes the Member Benefits Online System (MBOS). This digital portal allows members to apply for retirement, loans, and purchase service credit online. While many transactions are digital, the division maintains a Client Services unit at 50 West State Street for in-person counseling and assistance. However, due to high volume, appointments are often required or strongly recommended for complex matters. The division also conducts seminars and webinars to educate employees about their benefits and the retirement process.
Location and Security
The Client Services office is located on the 3rd floor of 50 West State Street (Capital Center). As a government facility, strict security measures are in place. All visitors must present valid government-issued photo identification at the security desk in the lobby. Visitors must pass through security screening before accessing the elevators. The building is situated in downtown Trenton, accessible via major public transit routes, with several parking garages available in the vicinity for a fee.
