Overview
Empowering Vermonters with Technology
Program Mission and Services
The Vermont Assistive Technology Program (VATP) is a federally funded initiative managed by the Vermont Department of Disabilities, Aging, and Independent Living (DAIL). The Burlington Tryout Center, located at 128 Lakeside Avenue in the Innovation Center, serves as a hands-on resource hub for individuals with disabilities, seniors, and their caregivers. The program’s core mission is to increase access to assistive technology (AT)—devices and services that help people overcome barriers in education, employment, and daily living. By allowing the public to explore and test these tools before purchasing, the VATP ensures that Vermonters find the right solutions to maintain their independence.
Tryout and Loan Services
The Burlington Tryout Center offers a unique, no-cost service model to the community:
- Device Demonstrations: Visitors can schedule an appointment to meet with an AT Specialist who will demonstrate various devices, from low-tech independent living aids to high-tech communication software and smart home devices.
- Short-Term Equipment Loans: The program operates a ”lending library” where individuals can borrow equipment for up to 30 days. This allows users to test devices in their own homes, schools, or workplaces to ensure effectiveness before making a financial commitment.
- Reuse and Exchange: The program facilitates the reuse of durable medical equipment through an online exchange platform, connecting people who have unused gear with those who need it.
Visiting the Innovation Center
The Tryout Center is housed in the Innovation Center (formerly the General Dynamics building), a large industrial complex in the Lakeside neighborhood. The facility is fully ADA accessible, featuring automatic doors, elevators, and wide corridors. Free parking is available in the large visitor lot adjacent to the building. While the program serves the public, visits to the Tryout Center are typically by appointment only to ensure a specialist is available to provide personalized assistance.
