Services and Mission
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Taxpayer Assistance Center (TAC) in Burlington provides in-person tax help for issues that cannot be resolved online or over the phone. Located in the Innovation Center at 128 Lakeside Avenue, this office serves taxpayers in Vermont who require face-to-face interaction. The primary mission of this center is to assist with account inquiries, adjustments, and identity verification while enforcing tax laws with integrity and fairness.
Appointment Policy
Service is by appointment only. Walk-ins are generally not accepted. To schedule a visit, taxpayers must call the appointment line at 844-545-5640. This system ensures that clients are seen promptly and that the specific service they need is available at this location.
Available Services
The Burlington TAC offers limited but critical services:
- Payments: Acceptance of check or money order payments for federal taxes. Cash is typically not accepted.
- ITIN Authentication: Review and verification of original documents for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (W-7) applications.
- Identity Protection: Identity verification services for those who have received letters (such as 5071C) requiring in-person proof of identity.
- Tax Law Assistance: During the tax filing season (Jan 1 – April 18), basic inquiries about individual Federal Tax Returns may be answered.
Security and Access
Visitors should arrive 15 minutes early and must bring a valid government-issued photo ID. Security screening is mandatory upon entry. Prohibited items include weapons of any kind. The office is located on the 2nd floor of the Innovation Center. Free parking is generally available in the complex’s lot.
