Overview
Elections Division – Secretary of State
The Elections Division is a critical branch of the Vermont Secretary of State’s Office, located at 128 State Street in Montpelier, VT. This division is responsible for the administration of the state’s election laws and ensuring the integrity of the democratic process. It serves as the primary resource for voters, candidates, and town clerks regarding election procedures, campaign finance regulations, and lobbyist disclosure.
Voter and Candidate Services
The division manages the statewide checklist and the Vermont Voter Portal (My Voter Page), allowing citizens to register to vote, request absentee ballots, and track their ballot status. Staff provide guidance to candidates on qualification requirements and petition filing.
- Campaign Finance: The office collects and publishes financial disclosure reports from candidates, political action committees (PACs), and parties to ensure transparency in election spending.
- Lobbying Regulation: Maintains the registry of lobbyists and their employers, processing registration fees and disclosure reports.
- Town Clerk Support: Provides training and logistical support to local election officials across Vermont’s municipalities.
Public Records and Access
As a public filing office, the Elections Division ensures that election results, campaign finance data, and lobbyist information are accessible to the public. While many records are available online, the Montpelier office is open for inquiries and filings that require in-person attention.
