Overview
Legal Counsel for the City
Office of the Corporation Counsel
The City of Boston Law Department, located in Room 615 of Boston City Hall, serves as the legal advisor to the Mayor, the City Council, and all City departments. Led by the Corporation Counsel, the department handles all litigation involving the City, negotiates contracts, and drafts municipal ordinances. It is important to note that the Law Department represents the City of Boston as a municipal entity and does not provide legal advice or representation to private citizens or the general public.
- Litigation: Defends the City in civil lawsuits, including personal injury, civil rights, and employment cases.
- Claims: Investigates claims filed against the City for damages. Note: Initial claims must be filed with the City Clerk, not directly with the Law Department.
- Affirmative Recovery: Recovers money owed to the City, such as for damage to City property.
Access and Security
As the department is situated within Boston City Hall, all visitors must pass through security screening at the building’s public entrances, which includes metal detectors and bag checks. While the Law Department investigates claims, it generally operates by appointment for legal matters. Documentation for claims is often handled via mail or through the City Clerk’s office to ensure proper processing.
