New Hampshire Boat Registration
Vessel Registration and Titling
The Boat Registration office, located within the New Hampshire Department of Safety headquarters on Hazen Drive, serves as the central processing unit for all motorized and sail-powered vessels in the state. Managed by the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), this office ensures compliance with RSA 270-E, which mandates that any motorboat of any size, as well as sailboats and sailboards 12 feet or longer, must be registered to operate on New Hampshire’s public waters. The Concord office handles initial registrations, renewals, and the issuance of unique Bow Numbers and validation decals. While many transactions can be completed at authorized marina agents or municipal clerks, the Hazen Drive location is the primary hub for complex issues, mail-in processing, and hull identification number (HIN) verifications.
- New Registrations: Processes applications for newly acquired vessels, requiring proof of ownership such as a bill of sale and a driver’s license.
- Renewals: Administers the annual renewal process for expiring registrations, which are valid until December 31st of each year.
- Hull Identification Numbers (HIN): Assigns and verifies HINs for homemade boats or older vessels lacking a manufacturer’s serial number.
- Mail and Drop Box Services: Provides a secure drop box for applications and processes mailed renewals for residents statewide.
Boating Laws and Safety
In addition to registration, the Department of Safety plays a key role in promoting boating safety. The registration fees contribute to the Navigation Safety Fund, which supports marine patrol enforcement, navigation aid maintenance, and educational programs. Owners should be aware that they must carry their registration certificate on board at all times while operating the vessel. The office also assists with replacement decals and registration transfers. Visitors to the Hazen Drive facility should be prepared for security screening, as it is a central state government complex housing multiple law enforcement divisions.
